Frequently asked questions

What is the Folktales of Gaspaar?

The Folktales of Gaspaar is a unique story experience. It's a collection of 24 folktales, each delivered to you by mail across a year.

While some are stories you might recognize - Stone Soup, The Princess and the Pea - and some are brand new originals, all are reimagined in the magical land of Gaspaar, where all of the Max Letters characters and stories live.

It's a fun way to be surprised and delighted by a series of beautiful stories, with the nostalgic magic we all remember of receiving a handwritten letter in the mail - sealed, stamped and posted to your mailbox. We want to keep this special experience alive for children - and adults! - everywhere.

What ages is this for?

Children ages 6 to 100.

If we must get specific, we recommend our original Max Letters collection for ages 8-14, and the Folktales of Gaspaar collection for ages 6-12, or even younger as read-alouds.

Of course these stories will grow with the reader. These are classics. They're meant to be enjoyed for a lifetime. Deeper meaning and a new level of enjoyment will come at each reading through the years.

What exactly does a subscription include?

A subscription includes 24 beautiful folktale letters mailed across 12 months' time. Each letter includes 2 physical pages, covered front-and-back in colorful story content. Most letters include a folktale-themed postcard tucked inside to encourage writing and sending your own snail mail as well. :)

Also included is a list of Question Prompts that will be made immediately available upon purchase, in the form of a PDF that can be downloaded or printed. These question prompts are meant to spark conversation with a young reader you gift, so that you may "keep up" with their story journey, even if you aren't reading the letters. They'll also help you to explore your young reader's thoughts and discuss deeper themes in the text such as friendship, courage, truth and more. All are able to be navigated at the age appropriate level of your young reader.

What is the 'Question Prompts' I see mentioned?

Once you purchase a subscription, a list of Question Prompts will be made immediately available to you in the form of a PDF that can be downloaded or printed. These question prompts correspond with each folktale letter, and are meant to spark conversation with a young reader you gift, so that you may "keep up" with their story journey, even if you aren't reading the letters. They'll also help you to explore your young reader's thoughts and discuss deeper themes in the text such as friendship, courage, truth and more. All are able to be navigated at the age appropriate level of your young reader.

Before I buy, I want to know more specifics about the story.

Each of these stories are either family-friendly classics like Stone Soup, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, and The Three Pigs, or brand new originals of the same style and quality - all reimagined in the magical world of the Kingdom of Gaspaar.

The folktales are "told" by the good cook in the royal kitchen, to young Prince Max and the children of Gaspaar who love to hear his strange and wonderful tales of old.

Is the content family-friendly? Can I read this aloud to the whole family?

Yes! The author reads these stories aloud to the children in his own family, so you'd be carrying on a lovely tradition if you read aloud to your family as well. The content contains action and adventure, but nothing inappropriate or unsafe for young ears.

Is this a book?

No. The content of our Folktales letters came from the author's heart purely for this special letter-based story experience. After receiving a tremendous response to our original Max Letters epic adventure story, I encouraged my father, the author, to think about how he might create a similar experience for younger children who might not be ready to keep up with one epic story across a whole year of letters. Instead, was there a way to give the same magical story-by-mail experience, in a way that would be just as enjoyable to our 8-14 year-old Max Letters readers - but also accessible to younger ones?

He had the idea of Folktales - stories handed down across time and culture - reimagined in the setting of Prince Max's Kindgom of Gaspaar. These shorter, individual stories, packed with meaning and simple truths of old, would be perfect stories for younger readers to enjoy all across a year!

We love the idea of being surprised and delighted by completely new stories with each letter. How fun?!
This, combined with the love and nostalgia we remember as kids, being so excited to open our own piece of mail that had been written, stamped and sent to us with care... We just had to give it a try – and sure enough, we think there's something special to this experience, and we hope you love it too!

I'd like all my kids to receive this. Can I add multiple names to the envelope?

Yes, you can send a subscription to multiple members of a household. Simply enter all of their names in the "Letter Recipient Name" fields at checkout. For example:

First Name: "Sam, Ben & Allie"
Last Name: "Walker"

Or:

First Name: "The Walker"
Last Name: "Family"

Or even fun ideas like this:

First Name: "Sir Knight Sam"
Last Name: "& Princess Allie"

Be as creative as you wish! It's up to you! :)

When will I receive my letter?

We mail letters on the 14th and 28th of each month. Your first letter will be mailed on the mail date you select as your starting mail date when you place your order. Letter delivery is within two weeks in the US and within 6 weeks internationally.

You will receive a Gift Printout immediately at purchase to tuck in a card or gift - or even attach to an email for instant delivery! This makes gifting easy - and perfectly timed!

How does gifting this work?

You will select the upcoming mail date of your choice. This is the date we will take your first letter to the post office. (We mail letters on the 14th and 28th of each month, unless it's a weekend or holiday in which case we'll mail the previous business day.) This way, you can delay your first letter due to a special occasion (like a birthday) if you prefer.
